King Versus King

I see New England Guy wants the Michael Jackson coverage to be over, so I'm sorry to say it's got at least one more day here on Pajama Guy.

That's because I've been meaning to comment on Representative Peter King's comments:

It's one thing to say Jackson is getting too much attention (though hey, it's not every day a star of his stature dies prematurely). Or that he wasn't especially admirable, even if you know people emphasize the good a person does after he dies.

But to make accusations that would be actionable if Jackson were alive is just bizarre. If King had any evidence that Michael Jackson was a child molester and a pedophile, he should have given it to the authorities years ago.

And now King is surprised at all the attention his statements have been getting. Maybe he can put out another video saying Americans have better things to do with their time than notice what he's saying.

But it is good to know the grandson of Haystack Calhoun has got his back.

I was going to post on this but but LAGuy beat me to it. Further example of the Republican party's attempt to wrap up the anti-pervert vorte and outreach to old guys who want the goddamn teenagers to get off their lawn.

There is a significant black population in Mr King's district. I predict he will get very, very few of their votes in the next election. Isn't slander against a dead guy actionable by the estate?

MJ was a pedophile. If U (or anyone innocent of such accusations) were accused of it, then U wouldn't pay off anyone under any circumstances to clear your name. He paid families off so as not to do time or (pun) be fully exposed.

I suppose O.J. didn't kill anyone either...?

I applaud Mr. King and agree that society should not deify pedophiles.

anon.

I would strongly defend Mr. King's right to free speech here (even if recognizing the political idiocy evident in his uttering it). If such case were ever to advance to a trial, there is no way he could he could be liable- there is enough out there that a reasonable person can accuse MJ of being a pedophile. Certainly "freak" and "pervert" are purely opinions and widely-shared ones at that.

The right to sue for slander does not survive a person's death. So perhaps King was waiting years for Jackson to die just so he could say whatever he wanted.

Falsely calling someone a pedophile is very much slander, and I'm pretty confident King would have lost if Jackson had taken him to court.

When you're extremely famous and rich and have hundreds of kids come to your place for sleepovers, you can probably expect to have some try get money from you. If Jackson were truly a pedophile, he would have molested, or attempted to molest, a large number of kids, and they would have kept coming out of the woodwork, rather than a stray case or two where he (or his handlers) figured it was worth paying to get rid of the nuisance. Furthermore, if a prosecutor went on a fishing expedition to see what he could get, and couldn't turn up a single case, that would strongly suggest the person being investigated didn't do anything.
