Promises, Promises

A lot of people are making a big deal about the numerous times candidate Barack Obama promised the health care debate would be televised on C-SPAN.

This is the kind of empty promise all politicians make. They love transparency when it can be used to attack their opponents, but don't think so much of it when it works against them. Perhaps Obama honestly believed health care reform would be popular, and the only way it's always defeated is that the special interests stop it behind the scenes. Instead, he and his party are losing the debate but they've got the special interests lined up in its favor.

So it figures they don't want to be too open about the process. If they could pass the law without telling anyone, they'd do that.

I also think the switch since the Christmas Day Bomber event with respect to counterterrorism efforts is amazing. The Obama administration is now going out of their way to assert they have not changed anything from the Bush administration's approach.

They state loudly that the Bush administration released far fewer prisoners from Gitmo than Bush did. This is nonsensical, of course, unless they are suggesting they would not have released some of teh prisoners Bush did.

And they point out again and again that Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, was arrested and tried in the courts as opposed to tried in military tribunal system. of course this neglects the fact that the military tribunal system for terrorists wasn't set up at the time of the Reid bombing attempt.

The Obama administration is striving to deny most of its campaign criticism of the Bush administration w/r/t combating terrorism, starting with criticism of the "surge" approach utilized in iraq, and now taking place in Afghanistan.
