You Can't Fire Me
Senator Byron Dorgan won't be running in 2010. That's bad news for Democrats. Now Chris Dodd won't be running, either. That's good news.
Dodd is highly unpopular in Connecticut, and it looked like his seat would be a pick-up for Republicans. But if a reasonably popular Democrat runs there, then it's a race.
There'll be a lot of open seats this time around, mostly on the Republican side. If the elections were held today, they'd have a decent chance of holding most of them. But who knows how things will look in November. Rather than figuring they've got things in the bag, they should concentrate--especially in candidate selection--on not shooting themselves in the foot.

The Kennedy Senate seat race (Jan 19) in MA is getting surprisingly close (from 20+ points to 9) though I think Coakley (D) will prevail. She may decide she actually has to campaign now. Brown (R)(father of Ayla of reality TV fame) is reasonable-sounding but carries the national party ID anchor- as an indy, he might have had a shot.
The Democrats pressured Dodd behind the scenes to drop out. The question now is can the Republicans still make the election about him. It's gotta be easier than the Dems strategy of making the 2010 election about Bush.
