Masterful

Tiger Woods' return has been a shot in the arm for golf. It's certainly got me watching again.

With one day left at Augusta, after up and down days, he's within striking distance. Yet the tournament has made me feel sorry for Phil Mickelson. If he didn't have to play in Tiger's shadow, he'd be considered the greatest golfer of his era. His back-to-back eagles, almost followed by a third, was the most exciting thing in The Masters so far. Tiger may make a run for it, but it would be nice for Phil to have his day.

What you want in sports is one guy against another, like Bird and Johnson, or Mantle and Mays (or Mantle and Maris). Golf had Palmer and Nicklaus, but now it's just Tiger versus the field.

But Phil Mickelson is boring. Tiger was always an exciting player- unfortunately now exciting for other reasons. [But if this scandal keeps Tiger those annoying corporatespeak commercials, it wasn't all bad.]

I'm annoyed I didn't apply for free at Golfsmith to get a Callaway driver. They had a promotion where if you had bought a driver in March or April you would get it for free if Phil won the Masters. There was, as usual, a way to enter for free, but I was too lazy to bother. Grrr.
