Good News

My favorite network show these days is The Good Place.  It's funny, but also thoughtful (both qualities being rare for a sitcom).

So I'm glad to read it's been picked up for a fourth season.  I don't believe the ratings are great--I'm sure it's getting a lot less than the lineup on CBS, which starts with super-hit The Big Bang Theory and then leads into TGP's competition, Young Sheldon.

The show, created by Mike Schur, only does 13 episodes a season, but manages to completely change the plotline about every four episodes.  And, it would seem, Schur started not only with a novel situation (a character who's got into heaven by mistake) but with an endpoint in mind.

An important model to Schur was Lost--a show that seemed to be going somewhere, but wasn't certain where it would land.  Perhaps The Good Place will have a bumpy landing as well, but at least it seems to know where it's going.

Meanwhile, congratulations to the fine cast.  Time they won some Emmys. (Same goes for another sitcom that NBC just took aboard, Brooklyn Nine-Nine.)  I would point out that The Good Place got two Golden Globe nominations today, one for best show, one for lead Kristen Bell--I would point it out, except the Golden Globes are, and have always been, a joke.
