Bucky Freakin' Dent

I like preposterous sports-politics analogies. After last night, I've been thinking Hillary is the 1978 Red Sox- held a commanding lead over a league/party rival (Sox through August and HRC until Iowa) watched it get frittered away until a mammoth event seems to leave them for dead (Sox four game sweep by rival Yankees in Sept 78 "Boston Massacre", Hillary dropping 12 straight contests over a month) then a phoenix-like return from grave (Sox win something like 12 of 15 after massacre to force a tie for division, Clinton takes Texas and Ohio and maybe old blue-collar Pennsylvania in April). Of course this analogy is in the long run bad for Clinton (see the title of the post) but to play it out it would mean that some lightweight also-ran superdelegate(s) tipping their support and the nomination to Obama in Denver to complete the comparison.

Of course I realize the major flaw in this intelligently-designed analysis is that in 1978 the support for the matched team/candidates is very different- the Yankees were generally the establishment team (even though they may have been the underdogs that season) and the Sox were the cool people's choice (actually I lived in Western Pennsylvania in 1978 but thats what my neighbors and colleagues say).

I amazed I remembered that reference. (but, not what it stands for- what did Darmok and Jalad exactly do at Tanagra again?)
