Quotes of Note

Fell asleep after Ohio was projected but woke up long enough to hear the best line from the coverage last night, after Obama announced the winner at 11:00 EST, an almost tearful recounts how race has been one of the major stories in his career and that Obama's election changed all that and key factor was because Obama was "articulate, instinctive and cool." ( he did leave out "clean") -words that probably at any other time would get him in a heap of trouble.

NE Guy supplements One other surreal moment in the coverage (I watched NBC)- After showing the party in Grant Park, Brian Williams jumped to the correspondent at the then seemingly more somber Arizona Biltmore. While the reporter dutifully reported that the race was not yet over, Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" was very clear in the background.

You're missing all the great stories of the night. Bachman won. Murtha won. Stevens won. Franken almost won. The public doesn't care who they vote for any more.

But they care very much who they vote against.

The fact that Murtha won says some very, very sad things about the people of Pennsylvania.

I remember that part with the cover of Joe Jackson! That made me crack up too. "They say that looks don't count for much and so there goes your proof" indeed.

Agreed re the people of Pennsylvania, and I would add the same sentiment for the people of Rep. Bachman's district.

John Murtha is not a geat thinker or statesman but some context: Murtha brought home the bacon for years. Murtha was an inarticulate voice of the non-elite, and until 2006, an unquestioned supporter of all things military, Murtha's change of view on the war represented the first serious non-lefty opposition to the Bush strategery and fit with the evolving national opinion. Murtha's opponent was a Bush supporter, Murtha's district has a lot of racists and rednecks (some proudly so) as he rather stupidly remarked, frankly the old coal country has been largely isolated from cultural currents and most youth with education have fled the area (The district probably reflects attitudes more prevalent throughout the country 30-40 years ago).

Let's not forget Murtha said there was was no way to pick sides in Iraq, that it was important we lose quickly, and accused innocent Marines of being killers.
